Back To School Basics

One key to a successful school year is effective classroom management. Research has verified what good classroom managers have discovered through experience. Every successful school year begins with the following keys to creating a great place to learn.

1. Arrange and organize classrooms to support instructional goals.

A. Check your traffic flow-patterns throughout the room and keep high traffic areas, such as those near your desk, pencil sharpener, and wastebasket, free from congestion.

B. Make sure you have a clear view of all students at all times. Walk around the room before students arrive to check your room from various angles.

C. Ensure that students can easily see instructional displays and presentations. Sit in the student seats before they arrive and look around the room to get a "student-view" of learning areas.

D. Make storage space and materials readily accessible. Places signs and plaque cards around the room to designate locations where students should return or store work, get supplies and easily locate learning areas.

2. Establish procedures for conducting routine activities and rules to govern student behavior.

A. Think about the number of procedures you may require for any given day. You may be surprised to find as many as 30 to 60 procedures. These classroom routines may change throughout the school year and tend to be modified, depending on the task. Consider the procedures you will want followed for the first week of school and make a list. Examples of such routines include...
·         getting the teacher's attention
·         moving within and outside the classroom
·         storing personal belongings
·         using learning centers
·         turning in assignments
B. Write and post your classroom rules. Effective managers establish only three to six "umbrella" rules that remain consistent throughout the year. Most rules are stated positively and are written in broad, general terms. Consider these rules that our teacher trainers use...

·         Prompt (be on time)
·         Polite (be respectful)
·         Participate (engage in the learning tasks)

3. Teach your classroom rules and procedures on the first day of school.

Rules and procedures are like any other content area. In order for students to demonstrate the skills, they need information, modeling and guided practice. Make the lessons fun, engaging and motivating. Monitor your students and give them lots of positive feedback for successfully completing the task of creating a safe, healthy and fun learning environment.

Do You Need Digital Student Issues?

The Children's Health Market knows that there is a tremendous gap between families who have access to digital media and those who do not. Because we are committed to reaching all families, THE GREAT BODY SHOP Student Issues continue to be available in print.

Additionally, we recognize that a number of families are using and relying upon the Internet, Tablets, E-readers, Notebooks, and other electronic devices to read, research, and learn. In order to serve this growing group of families (as well as requests from school districts), THE GREAT BODY SHOP wants to announce that we have Student Issues available in digital format for this upcoming school year.

While, this is great news for "digital classrooms" that are using one-to-one devices, it does present the need to customize some features in order to provide a seamless, trouble-free experience. Browsers, district servers, and the device itself all need to be tailored to receive THE GREAT BODY SHOP electronically.

If you would like more information, please contact! He'll get you started!

Social Emotional Learning

The Children’s Health Market actively supports the effort to make our schools more socially and emotionally healthy places to work and to learn. To that end, we have integrated five social/emotional learning competencies into the curriculum. There are a number of lessons and activities, as well as the NEW Social/Emotional Learning (SEL) Journal, which are designed to build the following five competencies:

Self-awareness:  accurately recognizing emotions and thoughts and their influence on behavior; assessing one’s strengths and limitations; possessing a sense of confidence and optimism

Self-management: regulating emotions, thoughts, and behaviors; managing stress, controlling impulses, motivating oneself; setting personal and academic goals; perseverance

Social awareness: exploring different points of view; empathizing with others from diverse backgrounds and cultures; understanding social and ethical norms for behavior; recognizing family, school, and community resources

Relationship skills: establishing and maintaining healthy relationships; communicating clearly, listening actively; cooperating; resisting harmful social pressure; negotiating conflict; seeking and offering help when needed

Responsible decision-making: making healthy, constructive, and respectful choices about personal behavior and social interactions; making healthy decisions regarding safety concerns; predicting consequences of various actions on the well-being of self and others

In an effort to support districts that have prioritized SEL for all students, THE GREAT BODY SHOP provides the opportunity for students to apply these competencies to each unit through the use of the SEL Journal. The SEL Journal is a sub-component of the overall Portfolio experience. The purpose of the Portfolio is to demonstrate learning progress by collecting student work as they apply the lesson concepts and skills to other areas of their lives, including substance abuse prevention, violence prevention, and social/emotional learning. At the conclusion of each lesson, students are asked to either write in their SEL Journal and/or place their work into the Portfolio.

In order to properly prepare students for the application of the SEL competencies to THE GREAT BODY SHOP SEL Journal, use of the lessons and practice sessions in the 2013 Getting Started section are encouraged. Just as teachers need to teach the critical thinking skill lessons prior to their application, the same is true for the behaviors and skills needed for the SEL Journal. If you plan to use the SEL Journal with your students, please teach the lessons found in the Getting Started section, titled "Instructions for Completing the SEL Journal". Once you have completed each of the four Journal Writing Sessions, repeat the same pattern of expectations, music, and procedures for each SEL Journal Portfolio activity found in THE GREAT BODY SHOP monthly units.

Governor Pat Quinn, of Illinois, signed into law House Bill 6193 (Erin’s Law) on January 24, 2013 mandating sexual abuse education and prevention curriculum in public schools statewide for students in pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. Erin's Law is currently in effect in Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Maine, and Missouri. It is pending in Georgia, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, New Your, and Pennsylvania.

If your state requires sexual abuse prevention, know that THE GREAT BODY SHOP has been providing lessons and skill development in that very area - for years! Working with child sexual assault experts, The Children's Health Market created developmentally appropriate lessons on safe, unsafe and confusing touches, how to respond to child abuse, and how to report it for Kindergarten through Middle School.

Recently, we have been conducting workshops and professional development on "Erin's Law and THE GREAT BODY SHOP", describing to teachers and administrators how our curriculum meets the intent and goals of is very important legislation. Teachers are given the opportunity to review and practice the  lessons that target the content and skills needed in this vital prevention effort.  If you would like more information on how we can help your district, please contact us at

Announcing A New Middle School Targeted Extension Activity

With the adoption of Erin's Law in Illinois, we were asked to provide a personal safety lesson for middle school. Previously we focused on dating violence at this level, which some states required. We have done a great job of providing curriculum about sexual abuse prevention K-6, and now we will be adding a middle school Targeted Extension Activity to the 2013 curriculum to help schools in Illinois be compliant with Erin's Law.

If you have a Teacher's Edition older than 2013, you can still access that activity by registering your Middle School Level 1 Teacher's Guide and exploring the 2013 edition for Unit 4:The Cycle of Life. You can view this activity after August 2013, but we wanted to alert you to this update, so that you can be looking out for it!

Dear Dr. Smartstuff....

Did you know that we update the letters to Dr. Smartstuff, published in the Student Issues, every year? It's true! While some letters are published, all letters are answered!

If your class hasn't written to Dr. Smartstuff yet, now is the time to compose individual or class letters. As the school year moves to a close, we are in the process of choosing letters to appear in next year's publications. Have your students practice their letter composition skills and send Dr. Smartstuff a health related question. He is ready to respond!

You can hear more about THE GREAT BODY SHOP and its alignment to The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects. Look for the session we are presiding over.

Our Director of Curriculum and Training, Roxanne Burns, will join Amy Renee Prior (Harding University High School, Charlotte, NC) and Johanna Chase (North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, Raleigh, NC) for a panel discussion/presentation. Come join the discussion!

Title: Common Core: Challenges and Successes Integrating with Health Education

Date/Time: Friday, April 26, 2013: 10:15 AM-12:15 PM

Convention Center Location: 207AB

Alignment To The Common Core For ELA

The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects are designed to support all students in the effort to create college and career readiness. THE GREAT BODY SHOP provides an abundance of opportunities requiring students to apply skills used in literature, reading informational text, writing for purpose and understanding, working in cooperative groups to discuss, listening and communicating effectively in every health lesson.

Using this matrix, we can help teachers find the natural links to the anchor standards found in each lesson. Because THE GREAT BODY SHOP is consistent with the instructional strategies used in every lesson, we found that the alignment to the anchor standards follows a similar pattern at every grade level.

Here is one example!

When bad things happen...

We, at The Children's Health Market, are always concerned about how children process difficult and painful things they see in the news. That is why we hope you will remind children that there are always grown ups around to help them. Finding someone to help, sharing feelings, and talking to trusted adults are very important skills for all children to learn. We encourage you to remember these wise words from Mr. Rogers as you help children process the recent events seen on the news.

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

― Fred Rogers

Using the same user-friendly process to plan, calendar, and evaluate school-based wellness activities, THE GREAT BODY SHOP now provides even more activities that can be implemented by School Health Advisory Committees (SHAC) at both the elementary and middle school level. The eight booklets target various members of the SHAC including administrators, teachers, PE teachers, counselors, school nurses, nutrition services personnel, family and community members, as well as support staff and students. Each booklet contains monthly, thematic school-based activities, identifies the various team members who will collaborate together, and provides simple assessment questions.
